do you have a vast knowledge of music? do you enjoy cataloging library resources and giving tours? are you willing to brave brutal Midwest winters, sticky summer humidity, and swarms of Cleveland Browns fans to get to work everyday? if so, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is looking for a librarian*!

for those about to apply, we salute you.

*this posting has been up for quite awhile, so clearly they still haven’t found what they’re looking for.

we know that computers are smart (ahem, Watson). but can they learn to sound Metal? apparently, they can thanks to the Encyclopedia Metallum. the site provides hundreds of thousands of bands, sub-genres, countries of origin, etc. that have been produced by a neural network. so if you’re in the market for a band name that hasn’t been taken yet, there’s plenty to choose from!

what an excellent day for a(nother) series renewal

when a TV series based on The Exorcist was announced last year, i was initially skeptical…after all, it’s a classic in both print and visual form and with the over-saturation of remakes and reboots infiltrating the entertainment industry, i feared it’s reputation would be slathered in pea soup. but when the pilot episode aired last September, i was pleasantly surprised and drawn in just as i was with the small screen version of Damien. but while the latter was sadly cancelled after one season, the former has been renewed for a second run. the first season’s highlight was the surprise return of Regan (and to a lesser extent, Chris) MacNeil. there are no details yet as to the plot for season 2, but for everyone who was curious as to whether the show would return, it looks like those prayers have been answered. amen!

hillbillies who code

Posted in Popular Culture, Techie Stuff with tags , , on May 11, 2017 by phanteana

while the title of this post might sound like the name of a hipster band, it’s actually part of the latest trend of people learning to code from anywhere and everywhere. according to Kentucky-based coal-miner-turned-coder Garland Couch, “a hillbilly is someone who is hardworking, thoughtful, and loyal.” in other words, it’s not the stereotypical image we tend to have of folks from certain regions of the States. Mr. Couch hails from a small town, but his career options grew bigger as he began learning code. just like a large portion of beginner coders, Garland is a career changer and although he is twice the age of an average CS graduate, he doesn’t let that stand in his way.  the same applies to Rusty Justice (yes, that’s what he goes by), who founded Bit Source in 2015 after 40 years of workin’ in a coal mine. Mr. Justice found that the salaries earned by miners were on par with those of many tech jobs, and with so many unfilled positions in the tech industry these days it made sense for him to get involved. with the solid work ethics of Rusty Justice, Garland Couch and countless others, it’s only a matter of time before Kentucky is dubbed “Silicon Holler.”
